Nova Scotia to get mix of snow, ice pellets, freezing rain, rain

There's some very messy weather headed our way to start the weekend, with a strengthening centre of low pressure is forecast to move up and over Nova Scotia on Friday night and through Saturday.

There's some very messy weather headed our way to start the weekend.

A strengthening centre of low pressure is forecast to move up and over Nova Scotia on Friday night and through Saturday. The system will bring a mix of snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain for the province.

Environment Canada has issued a combination of winter storm, freezing rain and wind warnings for the province:

Friday

8 p.m.: Lightly snowing in the Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne counties. Easterly wind gusts 20 km/h to 40 km/h.

10 p.m.: Snowing along a line from Lunenburg to Digby, and west of that area. East and northeast wind gusts of 20 km/h to 40 km/h.

Saturday:

12 a.m.: Snow reaches as far east as Halifax to Kentville. Snow turns to freezing rain and ice pellets in Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. Northeast wind gusts between 30 km/h to 60 km/h.

2 a.m.: Snow reaches Amherst to Sheet Harbour. From Halifax to Yarmouth, snow turns to freezing rain. Communities on the Atlantic coast from Lunenburg to Clark's Harbour will see rain. Northeast wind gusts 40 km/h to 70 km/h.

4 a.m.: Snow reaches New Glasgow. Freezing rain falling from Digby to Halifax to Sheet Harbour. Rain between Lunenburg and Yarmouth. Snow continues in the Annapolis Valley. Northeast wind gusts 40 km/h to 70 km/h.

6 a.m.: Snow mixed with ice pellets falling in the Annapolis Valley and Hants, Cumberland and Colchester counties. Freezing rain falling in Halifax County east of Porters Lake, as well as in Guysborough, Pictou and Antigonish counties. Rain falling from Halifax to Yarmouth. Northeast wind gusts 50 km/h to 70 km/h, except exposed areas of the coast which should see winds of 80 km/h.

8 a.m.: Snow mixed with ice pellets and freezing rain falling in Cape Breton, the Annapolis Valley and Hants, Cumberland and Colchester counties. Periods of rain for the rest of Nova Scotia. North and northeast wind gusts of 50 km/h to 70 km/h, except 80 km/h along exposed areas of the coast. Gusts of 100 km/h or stronger are possible in Inverness County north of Mabou.

10 a.m.: Snow mixed with ice pellets and freezing rain falling in the Annapolis Valley and Hants, Cumberland and Colchester counties. Rain from Sheet Harbour to Cape Breton. Showers from Halifax to Yarmouth. North and northeast wind gusts of 50 km/h to 70 km/h, except 80 km/h along exposed areas of the coast. Gusts of 100 km/h or stronger in Inverness County north of Mabou.

12 p.m.: A light mix of snow, freezing rain and ice pellets falling in the Annapolis Valley and Hants, Cumberland and Colchester counties. Cape Breton will see periods of rain, and the rest of Nova Scotia will see showers. Similar strength in wind gusts, though the direction may vary.

2 p.m.: Periods of wet snow along a line from Kentville to Shelburne and west, with periods of rain in Cape Breton. Showers for the rest of Nova Scotia. Wind gusts of 50 km/h to 70 km/h, except 80 km/h along exposed areas of the coast. Winds variable in direction. 

4 p.m.: Periods of wet snow from Kentville to Lunenburg and west. Scattered showers for the rest of Nova Scotia. Wind gusts of 40 km/h to 60 km/h — the direction may vary.

6 p.m.: Periods of wet snow from Halifax to Amherst and west, with scattered showers for the rest of Nova Scotia. Wind gusts between 40 km/h to 60 km/h and variable in direction.

8 p.m.: A mix of wet flurries and showers falling across Nova Scotia. Northwest wind gusts 40 km/h to 70 km/h.

10 p.m.: A mix of wet flurries and showers falling across Nova Scotia, with northwest wind gusts between 40 km/h and 70 km/h.

Sunday

12 a.m.: Scattered flurries across the province with northwest wind gusts between 40 km/h and 70 km/h.

2 a.m.: Scattered flurries across the province with west wind gusts between 40 km/h and 70 km/h.

4 a.m.: Scattered flurries ending, with wind gusts between 40 km/h to 70 km/h.
