Nova Scotia still wringing out after downpour

The detour on the Bedford Highway has been lifted, according to Halifax Transit, but the Hammonds Plains Road and Bluewater Road are not expected to reopen until Friday at the earliest.

The detour on the Bedford Highway has been lifted, according to Halifax Transit, but the Hammonds Plains Road and Bluewater Road are not expected to reopen until Friday at the earliest.

The rain might have stopped in Halifax, but commuters are still dealing with the fallout of Wednesday's storm.

In the Halifax region:

  • Hammonds Plains Road is "quite a significant issue," said Halifax Regional Police Staff Sgt. Lindsay Hernden. Police are redirecting inbound traffic at Kearney Lake Road and outbound at Gary Martin Road near the BMO centre.
  • Waverley Road between the 1600-2100 block is passable with caution.
  • In Dartmouth, there's some flooding at Hawthorne Street and Crichton Avenue. It's passable with caution.
  • Rocky Lake Drive and Quarrystone Drive area is passable with caution.
  • At the Fish Hatchery Park in Bedford, an area of the park, including the bandstand and parts of the walkway, are submerged.
  • On Union Street in Bedford, there is flooding in the parking lots of the Bedford Place Mall and Superstore.
  • The trail system and lower parking lots at Moirs Mill in Bedford are flooded.

A few cars are up to their windows in water in the centre of the flooded area on Hammonds Plains, reports the CBC's Craig Paisley.

  • Trunk 14 on the dyke in Brooklyn. Detour through Lawrence Road
  • Trunk 2, Elmsdale, between exits 7 and 8 (Traffic is rerouted, but commuters may experience traffic back-ups on Highway 102 northbound and on Route 214 through Elmsdale)
  • Glencoe Road, Georgefield
  • Old Truro Road, Elmsdale

Cumberland County

  • Gravel section of Hastings Road, from Pumping Station Road to Route 204
  • Barronsfield Road, from Route 242 to Boars Back Road on the River Hebert side
  • Boars Back Road from Route 242 to Barronsfield Road intersection
  • Smith Road, Amherst, closed from Highway 2 to Southampton Road
  • Route 302, Maccan, between Mines Road and Athol
  • Porter Road, outside Amherst, from Highway 2 to Nappan Road
  • Nappan Road on eastern side of Highway 2
  • Beecham Road, from Chapman Settlement Road to Route 366, Tidnish
  • Cove Road, Economy, from Trunk 2

Classes are cancelled at Cape Breton Highlands Education Academy due to weather. So is L'École NDA in Cheticamp.

L'nu Sipuk Kina'muokuom School in Indian Brook is closed due to flooding.

The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board says drivers are "using discretion" on side roads due to localized flooding.

The storm is slowly leaving the Maritimes.

Environment Canada says as of 2 a.m. Thursday parts of central and western Nova Scotia had received more than 100 millimetres of rain.
