Nova Scotia ski hills get ready to open for season

After a green Christmas across much of Nova Scotia, the province's ski hills are hoping to ring in the new year under a blanket of white.

None of the major ski hills are open yet, but several say they are busy making snow and hope to open within days.

"A great 24 hours of snowmaking! And Mother Nature is sending more our way," reads a tweet from Ski Martock near Halifax. "Still too early make a call on opening. Stay tuned."

It's the same story at Ski Wentworth.

"We're back making snow on our white slopes. Loving these cold temps!" the hill near Truro posted yesterday on Facebook.

The hill has also tweeted pictures of a white slope and a machine spraying a fine mist of snow. But the hill says it can't yet predict when the slopes will be ready for skiers.

Ski Ben Eoin near Sydney expects to open  on Friday or  Saturday of this week, a day or two ahead of last season's opening.

About 15 centimetres of snow fell in Cape Breton on Sunday, followed by a couple of days of cold temperatures.

In northern Cape Breton, North Highlands Nordic plans to open its cross-country ski hills on  Jan. 2, and says it has a good base to work from.

One hardy skier has already tackled the cross-country and telemark trails at Ski Tuonela, a back country resort in Cape Breton.

Owner Chris Law says there's about 22 centimetres of snow down and they have started the grooming process.

"We will be grooming the main trails in the next few days as long as it stays below zero," said Law.

"As [CBC meteorologist] Jim Abraham said, it will be a 'normal' winter in Cape Breton! Sounds good to me!"
