Separate crashes on Highway 103 in Lunenburg County leave 1 dead, 9 injured

A 63-year-old man from Musquodoboit Harbour died after a head-on collision on Highway 103 in Lunenburg County early Saturday. 

It was the first of two accidents that closed the highway near Exit 6. The accidents occurred in the same construction zone.

Police, fire and EHS responded to a two-vehicle crash just before 1 a.m., according to an RCMP media release. Officers learned upon arrival that a Suzuki SX4 travelling west veered over the centre-line and collided with a Ford F150.

RCMP say the driver and sole occupant of the Suzuki was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the pickup truck had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not injured. 

Highway 103 was closed for several hours and then reopened. 

8 injured in second crash

The road was closed again Saturday morning so an air ambulance could respond to a separate multi-vehicle collision.

According to a media release, Lunenburg District RCMP, fire and EHS responded to a report of a three-vehicle collision around 10 a.m.

When RCMP officers arrived they learned that a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Honda Civic, travelling eastbound, slowed in a traffic control zone and were struck from behind by a Dodge Ram. The collision occurred near Exit 6.

Four occupants of the Honda Civic, a 29-year-old male driver, 29-year-old female passenger and two children, all from Hebbs Cross, were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A fifth person in the Honda Civic, a 20-year-old male also from Hebbs Cross, was airlifted to hospital. There is no information on that person's status.

The three occupants of the Dodge Ram, the 34-year-old male driver, 32-year-old female passenger, and one child, all from Hebbs Cross, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.

The driver and lone occupant of the Santa Fe, a 70-year-old male from Parkdale, was not injured.

Highway 103 has reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
