If you're waiting for a notice from your doctor in the mail, give them a call instead.

That's the message in most cases from the Nova Scotia Health Authority, as a possible lockout at Canada Post threatens delivery service.

"Our organization would be impacted by a mail delivery," Margaret Angus, spokesperson with NSHA, said in a statement.

Common items sent or received in the mail by Nova Scotia health professionals include appointment notifications or reminders, patient reports to physicians and items such as colon cancer home-screening kits.

For those screening kits, the NSHA recommends dropping it off at a lab or reception desk at any of the NSHA hospitals.

For patient appointments, the health authority says service providers will call patients and clients to book them.

If a patient is expecting an appointment notice or reminder, and hasn't received it yet, the NSHA says they should call their doctor's office or the appropriate service provider instead.

If Nova Scotia residents have any questions or concerns about communications with health-care professionals in the event of a work disruption at Canada Post, email the NSHA at wearelistening@nshealth.ca.
