RCMP are investigating a house fire that left one woman dead and 10 members of the same family homeless in Grosses Coques, N.S.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the Mounties said they responded to the fire shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

They said police learned one person was unaccounted for and believed to be inside the home that was fully engulfed in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, authorities confirmed that a 47-year-old woman was inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A section of Highway 1 in Digby County was closed for several hours to allow firefighters better access to the scene.

The 10 people who managed to escape the fire are members of an extended family. They're staying with family and friends in the area.

The home was destroyed.

RCMP said the investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the provincial fire marshal's office, but initial information indicates the fire is not suspicious.
