Halifax taxi driver charged with sexual assault of passenger

Halifax police have charged a 39-year-old taxi driver with sexual assault after an incident in the city early Saturday.

Around 1:20 a.m. an officer on patrol spotted a taxi parked at the corner of Atlantic and Brussels streets

Halifax Regional Police have charged a 39-year-old taxi driver with sexual assault after an incident in the city early Saturday.

Police say around 1:20 a.m. an officer on patrol spotted a taxi parked at the corner of Atlantic and Brussels streets.

She saw some suspicious activity inside the vehicle and investigated further.

The officer determined a passenger inside had been sexually assaulted and the driver was arrested at the scene.

Bassam Aladin Al-Rawi was held in custody over the weekend and was scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial court to face a charge of sexual assault today.

The 26-year-old victim was taken to the QE II Health Sciences Centre by EHS and later released.
