Halifax's Parade of Lights to go on with new sponsor

After some uncertainty following the sale of Saltwire to Postmedia, Nova Scotia Power has stepped in to become the parade's title sponsor.

Halifax's annual Holiday Parade of Lights will go ahead this year after the recent sale of the event's usual sponsor, Saltwire, cast uncertainty over the beloved tradition's future.

The Holiday Parade of Lights Society said Tuesday in a news release that Nova Scotia Power is now the title sponsor.

Jennifer Parker, the utility's vice-president of communications and external engagement, told CBC News on Tuesday that the decision to sponsor the parade was made on Monday. She said the move was encouraged by employees.

"We know it's an important event and I think a cherished one with lots of tradition around the Halifax area. It feels really great to know it's going to happen and we're very happy to be a part of it," Parker said.

Saltwire Network Inc. and the Halifax Herald Ltd. was sold to Toronto-based Postmedia Network Inc. in a $1-million deal that was approved in August.

Parade to be held Dec. 8

The 29th annual Holiday Parade of Lights will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, beginning at 5 p.m. local time.

As with previous years, organizers are anticipating tens of thousands of people to come downtown to take in the floats from community groups, local businesses and corporations.

Those attending are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, toys or cash donations to be picked up along the parade route.

The donations, according to the news release, will help support local charitable drives including MOVE 100's Christmas Toy Drive and Virgin Radio's food drive benefiting Feed Nova Scotia.

The parade route begins at the Cogswell Street roundabout next to the Emera Oval and Citadel Community Centre. It moves south along Ahern Avenue, before turning onto Bell Road.

The parade continues down South Park Street, east along Spring Garden Road. The parade then turns left onto Barrington Street and ends at George Street.
