Here's a list of what's open and closed over the Christmas break in the Halifax area.

Food and drink:

  • Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market

Christmas Eve 10 a.m. — 2 p.m.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day — Closed
Reopens Dec. 29 10 am — 5pm

  • Gateway Meat Market

Christmas Eve 8:30 a.m. — 4 p.m.
Closed Christmas Day
Boxing Day 8:30 a.m. — 6 p.m.

  • Atlantic Superstore

Christmas Eve open until 5 p.m.
Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day

Christmas Eve open until 5 p.m.

  • Hospitals:

Walk-in blood-collection services and walk-in X-ray services at most Capital Health sites close at noon Dec. 24 and reopen on Dec. 29.

  • Waste collection:

Christmas Eve is a regular collection day. No collection on Christmas Day — if that's your day, put it out on Dec. 26.

Boxing Day is a regular collection day.

  • Halifax Public Libraries:

All branches of the Halifax Public Library will be closed.

  • Halifax Transit:

Christmas Eve — regular bus and ferry service
Christmas Day — holiday schedule for bus, no harbour ferry service
Boxing Day —​ holiday schedule for bus and ferry service

  • Canada Post:

All post offices will be closed. There is no collection or delivery of mail.

  • Halifax Oval:

Open for public skates:
Christmas Eve 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Christmas Day 2 p.m.
Boxing Day 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

  • Parking:

On-street parking meter spaces are free on Christmas Day, but all other rules and signs still apply.
