Glace Bay's Darrell Flynn new District 10 councillor

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has a new councillor in District 10 after Saturday's byelection saw 42 per cent voter turnout

More than half of voters cast ballots online or over the phone

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has a new councillor in District 10 after Saturday's byelection saw 42 per cent voter turnout.

Glace Bay's Darrell Flynn walked away with Saturday’s byelection, receiving more than double the votes of his nearest opponent.

And more than half of voters cast their ballots electronically, either by phone or online in the eight-day advanced poll.

Flynn is the manager of a Swiss Chalet in Sydney and a long-time school board member.

He says developing Sydney's port is a priority.

"I would really, really, really like and work hard on getting that harbourfront operating and running. I think that could be so advantageous to Cape Breton Island to get the harbourfront running. You know ... we just have to stop procrastinating and get things signed off and let's get it done," he says.

The byelection became necessary when former councillor Darren Bruckschwaiger resigned suddenly Sept. 3. He gave no reason at the time but later said he had an opportunity to work in Alberta.
