Mourners have been gathering at a Halifax vigil after gay activist Raymond Taavel was beaten to death outside a gay bar, while the accused, who has a history of mental illness, is in court today.

Kevin Kindred, a spokesman with the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project who organized the vigil, recalls Taavel as passionate and driven.
