Former MP quits party over Dartmouth orphanage management

Former MP Gordon Earle and his wife, Jane, have quit the provincial New Democratic Party over its handling of the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children.

The couple issued a news release on Thursday to say they’re disappointed the government has not called an inquiry into allegations of abuse.

That same day, former residents who allege they were abused at orphanage said they would not co-operate with the province unless it calls an inquiry.

Dexter proposed a review by a panel led by a social worker. 

Earle served as the M-P for Halifax West from 1997 to 2000.

The Home for Colored Children opened in 1921 as an orphanage for black Nova Scotian children.
