Digby's 'doctor lottery' accepting 500 new patients

Three physicians will accept 500 new patients Friday afternoon. South West Health says the registration will close after that.

Phone lines opened at 3 p.m.

Hopeful Digby-area patients hoped to dial up a doctor Friday in the community's “doctor lottery.”

Three physicians were taking on 500 new patients. South West Health said the registration would close after all the positions were filled.

First priority was to be given to the residents of Digby County, with no waiting list.

Prospective patients were asked to call 902-245-3025 after 3 p.m. with their MSI number, date of birth and phone number ready.

Fraser Mooney is communications director for the health authority.

“It can be frustrating for people who are on the phone, but for people who have mobility issues who can't get around, it's probably a lot better than having them come and wait in line,” he said.

“We think for most people, and for the doctor’s office itself, it's probably the easiest to explain, the easiest to understand and the easiest way to accept new patients.”
