A Dalhousie professor who was critical of the university's handling of the dentistry scandal says the latest external report on racism, sexism and homophobia in the dentistry program is a useful document.

Letitia Meynell was one of the professors who called for an independent inquiry into the sexualized violence on campus.

She says a comprehensive report by Ottawa professor Constance Backhouse opened the door for further discussion and reflection.

"I think it's a useful moment for pretty much everyone to sit back and think, 'Wait a second. How might I be participating in making these kinds of problems? How might I be participating in the perpetuation of sexism, of racism, of homophobia, and how can I live better?'" she said.

The report was released on Monday and contained 39 recommendations.

Meynell says some of the most important points were found elsewhere in the report, including the need for people not to be defensive when considering their own potentially problematic attitudes.
