People in the equestrian community are rallying to support Crosby Stables in Falmouth, N.S. after a fire destroyed the barn and killed five horses.

There will be an auction and dance Saturday night at the O'Brien Building at the Hants County Exhibition grounds.

Jennifer White, a rider and organizer, says support has been pouring in from across the province, with people volunteering to help clean up the property as well as donating supplies and labour.

"For any horse owner, this particular type of event hits home. It's probably our greatest fear," she says.

White says the goal is to raise $75,000 to rebuild the barn before colder temperatures set in this fall. A tent has been set up to serve as a temporary shelter.

The family-run stable is owned by Kevin Crosby, a well-known breeder and rider. It's a centre for hunter jumper riders

Most horses were in pastures when the fire started shortly after 7 a.m. on June 15 but some in the barn didn't make it out.

The fire marshal's office has closed its investigation and could not determine the cause of the fire.

One of the horses that died in the blaze was the Canadian Warmblood stallion, One Night Stand. Known as Bentley around the barn, he sired horses across the region.

Another that perished was Crosby's own show horse, Enigma.

A mare and a foal that were inside the barn are recovering.

"Crosby Stables have contributed for over 40 years to the equestrian community. Their horses live on through their breeding programs," says White. "It's certainly been a very traumatic event for the family and those close to them. They're very grateful and overwhelmed by the support that's been shown."

A Facebook group supporting Crosby Stables has more than 2,500 members. White says riders, friends and people from the area have been donating cottage vacations, golf packages even a breeding from an Ontario-based stallion for Saturday's live and silent auction.

Saturday night's event starts at 7 p.m. with a cash bar and band performing. White says the group is also accepting donations online.
