An inmate who died at the Cape Breton Correctional Facility over the weekend was a 43-year-old man who was accused of violating day parole conditions the day before, according to the Department of Justice.

Jail staff called emergency health services and tried to resuscitate the inmate when he was found unconscious. He was pronounced dead a short while later at 2:45 a.m. on Sunday.

On Monday, a department spokesperson said the man was originally sentenced to a period of 18 months for charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and breach of probation.

He was granted day parole on Jan. 14. Sixteen days later, on Jan. 30, he allegedly violated conditions of the parole.
