Cape Breton Regional Coun. Darrell Flynn dead at 58
Father of 2 died of complications from pneumonia
Cape Breton Regional Municipality Coun. Darrell Flynn has died in hospital after a brief illness.
Flynn was 58.
He was nearing the end of his first term on council, representing District 10, and announced in the spring he intended to re-offer in October's municipal elections.
Flynn was hospitalized on June 22 with complications related to pneumonia.
In a statement, regional Mayor Cecil Clarke extended his sympathies to Flynn's widow and two children and their families.
"We are deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss of such a good person, in the prime of his life, giving back to his community," Clarke said.
Flynn was a successful businessman as long-time owner of the Swiss Chalet restaurant in Sydney.
Prior to winning his council seat, he also served as an elected member of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.
Flynn is the second regional councillor to die during this term.
District 12 councillor Charlie Keagan passed away in January from complications after a December heart attack.
In addition, District 4 Coun. Claire Detheridge suffered a brain hemorrhage in December and will not re-offer in October.
