Two young Chinese entrepreneurs who are former students at Cape Breton University have their sights set on opening a Thai-Chinese restaurant and Asian market in downtown Sydney within three weeks.

Shibin Xu and Sheng Yu Zhi, both 26, bought the downtown building that formerly housed Chandler's Bar and the Rum Jungle, and have nearly completed renovations on what will be known as A Bite of Asia.

Xu graduated with a bachelor of hospitality and tourism management degree in May from CBU.

"It's really a huge, huge gamble," he said, "but both my partner and I would like to stay here."

A number of factors have contributed to Xu's determination to make a go of it in Sydney, including the mentorship of his current employer at Boston Pizza, and the support of local agencies such as the Cape Breton Partnership.

"They know the downtown needs more business," he said. Xu appreciates the attention he and his partner are receiving as young entrepreneurs who can help grow the business community downtown.

The duo have lined up the services of a young Chinese chef with seven years experience.

Xu said he's banking on the professional community and public service workers in the downtown being attracted by his Asian fare.

"People who are willing to try something new," he said.

He estimates the business will employ a total of 25 full-time and part-time workers. As for the opening date, his goal is clear.

"Really trying to be ready for Valentine's Day, since we already missed Christmas," he said. "I don`t want to miss Valentine's Day — that's a big day for a restaurant."
