RCMP say a body found in Oakfield Provincial Park near Halifax on Wednesday morning was burned, but they won't discuss the extent of the burns.

The man's body was discovered at 8:23 a.m. by a person walking their dog in the park. It was on the side of the road in the trees, just up from the train tracks.

Nova Scotia RCMP Sgt. Alain LeBlanc said the man has not been identified. He said the age of the man is also unknown.

"There's a lot of unknowns here," said LeBlanc. "At this time, the investigation is really starting and continuing and so there's a lot of details that are not available."

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Suspicious death

The major crime unit was called in as police consider the death to be suspicious. The medical examiner is also helping with the investigation.

Members of the forensic identification unit spent Wednesday combing the woods for evidence. The park was blocked off by police vehicles, and bright yellow police tape was wrapped around the trees down the road.

The body was removed Wednesday afternoon, but LeBlanc said police will keep one section of the scene blocked off from the public overnight.
