Bowater mill could lose 80 jobs

Workers at Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd. mill met Monday night in Liverpool to hear about proposed concessions and job cuts.

Workers at Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd. mill met Monday night in Liverpool to hear about proposed concessions and job cuts.

Union officials shared the latest offer from parent company AbitibiBowater, which would effectively take 80 jobs away from workers and allow management and outside workers to do the work instead.

At the end of the meeting, union members decided to vote Wednesday on whether or not to accept the plan.

AbitibiBowater said two weeks ago that the Brooklyn pulp and paper mill's manufacturing, electricity and labour costs have become too expensive and the mill is not competitive.

The company said the workers have until Jan. 1 to find ways to save money, or the mill could close for good.
