Atlantic Wholesale Club searching for man who dropped $1,900
Customer who usually comes in every evening hasn't been to the store since March 13
Staff of the Atlantic Wholesale Club in Halifax are trying to track down a customer, who they've nicknamed the Sugar Man, after he dropped $1,900 in cash during his last visit to the store.
John Lockerby, the store manager, said the man is a regular customer who usually comes in once a day, but they haven't seen him since the day the money was lost on March 13.
Lockerby said staff nicknamed him the Sugar Man because he always buys broken bags of sugar for his church. Staff do not know his name and they don't know which church he attends.
An honest person found the wad of cash, Lockerby said. It was mostly $100 bills held together with an elastic band.
"A customer who was a few minutes behind him noticed the money on the floor and picked it up. Very honest person, obviously, as she turned it into one of our colleagues," he said Friday.
Two of the store's 32 security cameras captured the moment the wad of cash was dropped. Lockerby said they figured the Sugar Man would return the next day, like he always does.
When he didn't return, Lockerby said staff became concerned.
'We tried different angles'
"Very unusual, as he usually comes in every evening," Lockerby said.
The store has circulated the man's photo, but no one seems to know who he is.
"We tried different angles, you know, showing his picture to different people, amongst staff and customers, but nobody can give a positive ID as to what his name is. That's why I contacted CBC," Lockerby said.
"Hopeful you would show his picture, face and story and hopeful someone would see him and know his money is here and hopefully that will mean another happy ending."
The store has had a number of lost and found incidents over the past few years, said Lockerby.
"There's been a huge amount of money or wallets or jewellery that have been turned in," he said.
"Customers, give them full credit, they could have easily have picked them up and taken them and nobody know the difference, but so many times they bring them in. As recently as yesterday there was a cheque for $60,000 turned in."
If anyone knows the Sugar Man's real identity, Lockerby wants him to know his money is safe at at the Atlantic Wholesale Club store on Chebucto Road.
