23-year-old inmate found dead at Burnside jail

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who was found dead in his jail cell at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth.

The inmate was found unconscious and unresponsive just after 8 a.m. on Monday, said the Department of Justice.

Police were called and the man was pronounced dead just before 9 a.m.

Const. Pierre Bourdages, a spokesman with the Halifax Regional Police, said the medical examiner’s office was on the scene and trying to determine the cause of death.

The Department of Justice said it will conduct an internal investigation.
