No plant jobs affected, managers and secretary positions eliminated

More than a dozen workers in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland were let go this week from Farmers Dairy.

Thirteen out of 500 Farmers’ employees received layoff notice Monday and Tuesday.

No one from the plants were laid-off. The layoffs were in the company’s support, finance and supply offices and included secretaries and managers.

The Truro office laid off one person. Ten people were let go from the Bedford office and another two people were laid off in Newfoundland.

Four people opted for early retirement.

The company is still evaluating the future of the Truro cheese plant. It’s possible that the cheese plant could face closure. A decision will be made in the coming weeks, said a spokesperson for Farmers Dairy’s parent company, Agropur.

Agropur is a Quebec/Canadian company that merged with Farmers earlier this year.
