Yukon First Nations case to be debated on Twitter by law students
Students will argue duty of governments to consult First Nations on mining developments
Law students from across the country are going to take to Twitter today to debate a mock-court case based on the case of the Ross River Dena Council versus the Yukon Government.
"In our view it was a case of national importance," said Andrew Gage, senior counsel with West Coast Environmental Law and an organizer of the event.
He says students will argue an appeal to the Supreme Twitter Court of Canada over the duty of governments to consult First Nations on mine development.
Matthew Mowbrey, a law student at the University of Alberta, says the topic of aboriginal rights and mining is important issue across the country.
"I think that the idea for me is to be able to bring legal concepts into the public realm and to an audience which might not necessarily get that information," he said.
