The Yukon government is looking to ease some of the pressure at territorial campgrounds by adding more sites.

A total of 22 new campsites will be added next season to three campgrounds — Marsh Lake (six sites), Wolf Creek (nine sites), and Twin Lakes (seven sites). The government will spend $237,000 on the expansions.

It will also spend an additional $185,000 to upgrade and improve several other campgrounds by fixing outhouses, boat launches and docks, and installing bear-proof food lockers.

Yukon's 41 roadside campgrounds have become increasingly popular, according to the government. Visitation increased by 13 per cent between 2012 and 2014. An estimated 34,000 daily permits were sold this season.

The new campsites will be ready to use by spring, the government says.

Work is also continuing on the new 35-site Conrad campground near Carcross.
