Young Tuktoyaktuk couple found dead
RCMP officers found two people dead in a small cabin in Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., Monday afternoon.
The G Division Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Unit from Yellowknife are on the scene.
Police are releasing little information, but do say they're treating the deaths as suspicious.
According to an RCMP press release, officers responded to a call to the detachment received at around 3:50 p.m Monday. When they entered the residence, they found the two people dead.
Officials are still trying to reach the next of kin and no names have been released.
Tuktoyaktuk Mayor Merven Gruben said the community is in shock.
"Everyone is feeling the mood of sadness and loss and confusion," said Sister Faye Trombley with the Roman Catholic Mission.
"And just the darkness of the outside – 24 hours darkness – is somehow darkness that we're feeling in our spirit. And it’s not a time for curiosity, it’s not a time for questions, it’s not a time for understanding, it’s just a time to be there. This is heavy for all of us."
Trombley says people are coping by getting together and sharing food with those who are mourning.
It's been a tough week for the community. Besides the couple found in the cabin, two elders also died earlier this week.
