Yellowknife speedskater recovering after concussion
Michael Gilday collided with another skater on Wednesday and hit his head on the ice
A Yellowknife speedskater is recovering at home after suffering from a severe concussion on Wednesday.
Michael Gilday was skating his first 1,500-metre race at the Intact Insurance Short Tract Team Selections in Montreal, when he and skater Charle Cournoyer of Boucherville, Que. collided and Gilday hit his head on the ice.
Gilday was supposed to skate again on Saturday, but officials with Speed Skating Canada say he wasn't ready — and may not be for the rest of the competition.
Yves Hamelin, Short-Track Program Director for Speed Skating Canada, said Gilday suffered "pretty severe" symptoms from his concussion. He says Gilday won't be allowed to compete again until he's gone 24 hours without symptoms.
Gilday is expected to get an in-depth examination on Monday, which will determine if he'll race again in this competition.
Hamelin said Gilday continues to rest in the hospital with his father, mother and girlfriend by his side.
The Intact Insurance Short Tract Team Selections are considered an important step in the qualification process for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February.
