A fire that destroyed a houseboat on Yellowknife Bay Friday morning is suspected to have been caused by a propane heater, say RCMP.

The fire that began around 5:30 a.m. reduced the red and blue houseboat, located off Jolliffe Island, to a pile of debris.

RCMP say the sole occupant was able to escape without injury.

While one firefighter operated a hose, a Coast Guard boat could be seen floating past the former house, while several curious morning commuters stopped their cars by the dock to get a look at what was going on.

RCMP say police officers responding to the fire were assisted by employees from Air Tindi, who transported them to Jolliffe Island.

The RCMP say they also deployed a boat and assisted the fire department by transporting firefighters between the public dock and Joliffe Island.

RCMP say the fire is not considered suspicious.
