Woman sexually assaulted in downtown Whitehorse

Whitehorse RCMP have issued a public alert after a woman was sexually assaulted near the park at the end of Main Street Tuesday night.

Whitehorse RCMP have issued a public alert after a woman was sexually assaulted downtown Tuesday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. in the Teegatha’Oh Zheh Park near the end of Main Street.

Const. Christine Grant says the woman was punched and thrown to the ground by a man who then sexually assaulted her.

"We've got someone walking home alone and out of nowhere is viciously attacked and so we really want to narrow down a suspect for sure," she said.

"Whitehorse is a relatively safe place to live so this is unsettling for everyone."

Grant says the man had long dark hair and wore a grey bandana with blue jeans.

She says the victim is working with police to further identify the suspect.

Police are advising people to be vigilant, and take steps necessary to adequately protect themselves.
