WestJet reduces summer Whitehorse flights to 3 times a week
The airline says it will fly between Whitehorse and Vancouver on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, instead of daily, starting May 11.
WestJet is reducing its seasonal service between Vancouver and Whitehorse this summer.
Robert Palmer, a spokesperson for the airline, said in an email WestJet will have three flights per week, Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, between May 11 and Oct. 24.
WestJet had been flying daily between the two cities during the summer, starting in 2012.
Palmer said there is not enough demand to justify daily service.
Pierre Germain of Yukon's department of Tourism says he understands WestJet is in a competitive business, and must respond accordingly.
And he says visitors still have lots of choice when booking travel to Yukon.
"Air arrivals are making up a larger and larger percentage of our visitation on an annual basis," Germain says. "Last year, visitation at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport set a new record."
WestJet says it will re-evaluate its decision in the fall.
