Bruce Charlie is the new chief of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation in Old Crow, Yukon.
The community of 245 people held an election yesterday.
According to the unofficial results, Charlie was elected with 78 votes. Howard Linklater received 43 votes; Stanley Njootli Sr. received 42; and Tracy Rispin received 41 votes.
The election was called after dozens of Vuntut Gwitchin members signed a petition in March stating a "loss of confidence and good standing" in their leadership. They called on Chief Roger Kyikavichik to resign.
In Monday's election, three candidates for councillor were also acclaimed: Paul Josie, Dana Tizya-Tramm and Margaret Smith.
