Man reported missing after bear 'encounter' near Tulita found dead
Man reported missing after he and travel partner encountered bear 50 km south of Tulita, N.W.T.
A man who was reported missing after a "bear encounter" near Tulita, N.W.T., has been found dead, RCMP have confirmed.
Police say they found the body of the missing man Friday afternoon.
A post-mortem examination has been ordered, and they are working with the NWT Coroner Service on an investigation., RCMP said in a news release.
"Evidence in the investigation confirms a bear encounter," say RCMP.
They said the territorial Department of Environment and Natural Resources is also assisting in the investigation.
On Thursday RCMP said they were responding to an emergency beacon signal activated in an area approximately 50 kilometres south of Tulita accessible only by air or water.
Personnel from RCMP and the Department of Environment and Nature Resources travelled to the area by helicopter.
"A woman reported her travelling companion had an encounter with a bear. The man was reported missing after the encounter," RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon said in an earlier press release Friday.
RCMP say the woman made contact with a second group of travellers who activated their emergency communications device.
The woman and the members of the other party have all been extracted from the area.
