Tlicho seek injunction to protect Wek’eezhii board

The Tlicho government is applying for an injunction to stop the dismantling of regional land and water boards while its lawsuit against Ottawa’s superboard legislation makes its way through the courts.

The Tlicho are applying for an injunction to stop the dismantling of regional land and water boards.

It's part of a lawsuit the Tlicho filed in May to stop the federal government from eliminating the Wek’eezhii Land and Water Board under Bill C-15.

Ottawa wants to replace the Sahtu, Gwich'in and Tlicho boards with a single superboard.

The regional boards are scheduled to receive federal funding until next April.

The injunction calls on the courts to order the funding to continue until the lawsuit concludes.

The Tlicho say the proposed amalgamation violates rights they were granted in their 2003 land claim and self-government agreement.

Earlier this month, the Sahtu said they will also be going to court to protect their land and water board.
