A public memorial service will take place in Yellowknife today to celebrate the life of former N.W.T. Commissioner Stuart Hodgson.

In 1967, Hodgson became the first resident commissioner of the Northwest Territories, a position he would hold for 12 years. During that time, he oversaw the move of the territorial government from Ottawa to the new capital of Yellowknife.

Hodgson died in December at age 91.

The memorial is being held at 3 p.m. in the Great hall of the Legislative Assembly building.

A reception hosted by Comissioner George Tuccaro will follow.
