Sheila Karkagie receives death threat

Sheila Karkagie says she received a death threat this morning, after speaking out about Tulita Land and Financial board members who received contracts to work on a fracking operation the board supported.

'If you don't keep your mouth shut somebody is gonna kill you,' someone said on the phone

A woman in Tulita, N.W.T. says she received a death threat because she’s speaking out about the business community benefiting from fracking.

Sheila Karkagie posted on the "Hydraulic fracking Sahtu Discussions" Facebook page that she received a phone call this morning.

She says the person on the other end of the line said, "If you don't keep your mouth shut somebody is gonna kill you.”

Last week, Karkagie told the CBC that some former board members on the Tulita Land and Financial Board received contracts to work on a fracking project, after they recommended the project go ahead.

Karkagie, and another previous Tulita Land and Financial Board member, Doug Yallee, say that’s a conflict of interest.

The current chair of the board, Clarence Campbell, said board members always declare conflicts of interest when they arise.

But Karkagie wants a new bylaw forbidding business owners to sit on the Tulita Land and Financial Board.

Karakagie told the CBC Thursday morning that she plans to report the death threat to the RCMP.
