Samuel Nuqingaq is Uqqummiut's new MLA

A judicial recount found that Nuqingaq beat Clyde River's Niore Iqalukjuak by just two votes.

Byelection to be held in Rankin Inlet South

Samuel Nuqingaq has been declared the MLA-elect for Uqqummiut, after a judicial recount today for the Nunavut constituency.

The recount found that Nuqingaq won by two votes over Niore Iqalukjuak.

The win means that Qikiqtarjuaq will be sending its first ever MLA from that community to the legislature.

The recount took place at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit today.

Meanwhile, voters will be heading back to the polls in the Kivalliq.

A recount for that constituency confirmed that Lorne Kusugak and Alexander Sammurtok tied for votes in the October 28th election.

That means there will be a by-election in Rankin Inlet South. Elections Nunavut's lawyer told CBC that it will likely be held in the new year because of the holidays. Anyone from across the territory can run in that by-election.
