Sabina Gold submits draft impact statement to Nunavut board

Sabina Gold and Silver submitted the draft environmental impact statement for its proposed Back River gold project to the Nunavut Impact Review Board on Wednesday.

Sabina Gold and Silver submitted the draft environmental impact statement for its proposed Back River gold project to the Nunavut Impact Review Board on Wednesday.

The Back River property is located in Nunavut's Kitikmeot region, 75 kilometres south of Bathurst Inlet.

Sabina is proposing to build open pit mines that would extract and process 300,000 ounces of gold per year for about 10 years. The draft EIS says site preparation could begin in 2014 with construction beginning as early as 2016.

The project would include building a winter road to Bathurst Inlet and re-supply by sealift. The initial phase would also require a winter road connecting the site to N.W.T.'s Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road.

Sabina also applied for water licences for the project to the Nunavut Water Board this week.
