Royals commend RCMP officers in Iqaluit

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, paid tribute to Nunavut RCMP at the legislature during his first morning in Iqaluit.

The Prince gave out Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Long Service medals and Commander’s Commendation awards to 14 RCMP officers.

Sgt. Paul Solomon received two honours.

"It's very gratifying. He's an amazing person, very friendly, it's kind of hard to describe actually," said Solomon.

Solomon was recognized for his efforts after the deadly First Air crash last summer in Resolute, Nunavut. He also received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.

"It's very very much appreciated all that you do in the service of the Crown and going that extra mile," Prince Edward said to the members.

The Prince and his wife, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, are in Iqaluit for two days. The countess visited the Qimaavik women's shelter this morning.

Next on his Royal Highnesses' agenda is a tour and tea at St. Jude's Cathedral.
