The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling two types of Quaker Harvest granola bars over fears they were contaminated with the Listeria bacteria.

The agency is advising people to throw out the recalled products: Quinoa Granola Bars – Chocolate Nut Medley and Quinoa Granola Bars – Yogurt, Fruit & Nut.

Quaker Canada, a business unit of PepsiCo Canada, said the bars were distributed to a number of Longo's stores, drug stores and pharmacies across Ontario. The company said the products contained sunflower kernels that may have been contaminated.

High-risk groups like pregnant women, elders, and people with weakened immune systems should seek medical attention if they think they may be infected.

Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can cause premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth, says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

"In severe cases of illness, people may die," the agency's food recall states.

The symptoms of a Listeria infection include:

  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • fever
  • muscle aches
  • severe headaches
  • neck stiffness.
