The building is still standing, but the community freezer in Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, was gutted by fire Tuesday morning.
Nobody was inside at the time, said Geela Kooneeliusie, the hamlet's senior administrative officer, in Inuktitut.
The building is run by the hunters and trappers organization and was used to butcher and store game for individuals or for sharing.
"Without doubt, many will be affected by this," Kooneeliusie said.
She hopes to see the facility replaced.
There's no official word yet on what caused the fire.
