Fuel spill in Pond Inlet, Nunavut, prompts public warning

The Nunavut government is warning people in Pond Inlet to stay away from the area around the community's tank farm after 7,000 litres of diesel fuel spilled into the ocean.

In a news release Wednesday, the department of Community and Government Services said the fuel spill was discovered June 11, and happened due to "a ruptured flex connection in the pipeline."

It said people should keep their pets away, as well.

It said the pipeline has been capped for the time being.

"An environmental consultant has assessed the area and is preparing an action plan for remediation," it wrote.

If anyone sees fuel sheening near the shoreline in the coming weeks, the government is asking them to report it to the 24-hour spill report line.
