Wildlife officers are asking Iqaluit residents to remain vigilant following the arrival of two polar bears in the city last week.

One bear was killed when it returned to town after being scared away. The other disappeared on the sea ice in Frobisher Bay after running through the middle of town.

"We are just in a wait and see mode," says Jason Aliqatuqtuq, the Nunavut government's wildlife manager for South Baffin.

He says his officers were on the lookout all weekend for the second bear, but didn't see it.

"As time permits we will continue to monitor with the officers we have on hand and will assist in reported sightings."

Officials are asking residents to call the wildlife office in Iqaluit if they see a bear. The number is: 975-7900.

They're also asking residents to stay away from the animal.
