Pangnirtung's Uqqurmiut Centre damaged by thieves

The centre's general manager says windows were smashed, large carvings were destroyed and about two dozen small carvings were stolen.

Thieves caused extensive damage to the Uqqurmiut Centre and other buildings in Pangnirtung last week.

James Paris, the centre's general manager, says windows were smashed and large carvings were destroyed. About two dozen small carvings were stolen.

Paris says there is a lot of damage, and the destruction will hurt artists in Pangnirtung. The centre will have to spend time and money on the cleanup instead of on local artists, and he says that will affect the upcoming print collection.

Paris says there was also damage to other buildings in the community. The RCMP are investigating.
