The Hamlet of Pangnirtung has lifted the state of emergency it issued April 2 after a fire at the power plant caused a community-wide power outage over Easter weekend.

Temporary power was restored four days later using emergency generators but the state of emergency remained until a longer-term solution could be put in place.

Four self-contained generator units were delivered to the community from Iqaluit by a heavy-lift Sikorsky S-64F Skycrane helicopter last month. The helicopter was itself delivered to the Nunavut capital by a massive Antonov 124 cargo aircraft.

The Government of Nunavut says the system is a "mid-term power solution" that will provide "full, stable power to all residences and buildings."
