Iqaluit's old pool at the Astro Hill complex is being filled in so the space can be used for a conference area.
The City of Iqaluit had leased the pool from Nunastar Properties for decades until cracks developed in the basin, forcing its closure last year.
Iqaluit is now planning construction of a new aquatic centre.
Bruce Alton, chief operating officer of Nunastar, says the creation of more conference space is good news for the city.
"They can have more trade show space, or dining space, or what have you. It just gives them more flexibility and gives conference organizers a lot more flexibility."
Alton says cement is being poured for a floor for the room.
The conference space should open next year.
