Nunavut's youngest mayor resigns
Coral Harbour councillor says Simeon Dion resigned due to lack of training
The mayor of Coral Harbour, Nunavut, has resigned after only serving for two months.
Simeon Dion, 29, won the mayor's seat during the December municipal elections, becoming the youngest mayor in Nunavut. He handed in his resignation at the start of the new year.
Ronnie Ningeongan, a hamlet councillor, says the council members urged him not to resign but says Dion kept to his decision.
Ningeongan says Dion's main reason for resigning was a lack of training and support.
"He had nowhere to face to get help," he said. "The government was going to help him but the weather has not been co-operating. CGS was going to teach him how to work as mayor and as a leader for the community."
A by-election will be held to replace Dion. Nominations opened today.
