Nearly a pound of marijuana and 200 vials of hash oil stuffed inside frozen meat was just one of four separate drug and liquor busts made by RCMP in Nunavut this month.

On Dec. 16, officers found 444 individually wrapped grams of marijuana and the vials of hashish oil hidden within different frozen meats in a freezer box on its way to Clyde River from Ontario. The approximate street value of the drugs seized totalled more than $38,000.

In two of the seizures, individuals were searched, and in the other two, RCMP intercepted packages.

"We typically rely on tips from the public and that is what instigates us to launch an investigation," said Const. Ian Allen. "We don't just go out and randomly search packages."

The other three busts happened in Pond Inlet. RCMP in that community seized 210 grams of cannabis oil and 215 grams of cannabis resin on Dec. 8, estimated to be worth $44,000.

On Dec. 14 they seized a package containing a pound of marijuana, marijuana derivatives and some hallucinogenic mushrooms with an estimated value of $38,000.

And on Dec. 21, Pond Inlet RCMP seized 17 litres of home-brewed liquor with an estimated street value of $900.
