Nunavut MLAs vote to extend Samuel Nuqingaq's suspension
Nunavut MLAs passed a motion Thursday to extend the suspension of Uqqummiut MLA Samuel Nuqingaq until July 16.
Nuqingaq has been suspended from legislature and its committees since March. He represents Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq.
Arviat South MLA Joe Savikataaq moved the motion. It was supported by all members present in the chamber except Justice Minister Paul Okalik, who abstained.
Nuqingaq is also facing two charges including assault for an incident alleged to have occurred in February. He is scheduled to appear in court on those charges at the end of June.
Savikataaq says Nuqingaq has now entered into a 60-day residential treatment program for substance abuse.
Tununiq MLA Joe Enook, who represents Pond Inlet, has been helping Nuqingaq's constituents during his suspension.
