Nunavut could soon see 5 more lottery terminals

Tom Sammurtok, the minister for Community and Government Services, says more Nunavut communities could see lottery terminals in the near future.

Nunavut could see the arrival of five new lottery terminals as early as 2015.

Tom Sammutok, Nunavut’s minister for Community and Government Services, says one terminal was added last year, and another will be added this year.

The NWT Sport and Recreation Council manages Western Canada Lottery Corp. sales in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

“Negotiations are currently underway with WCLC to see the program expand to four additional communities in 2015,” Sammurtok said.

Last fall, a lottery terminal was placed in the Northern Store in Rankin Inlet.

Iqaluit already had two lottery terminals, at NorthMart and Baffin Gas.

In 2012, those two terminals sold about $1.6 million worth of lottery tickets.

Of that, about $1 million went towards prizes and direct expenses.

About $100,000 went to the Western Canada Lottery Corp. for administrative expenses.

And over half a million dollars went to Sport Nunavut.
