Outages on the Northwestel network have affected telephone and internet services across the North this afternoon, as the telecommunications company continues to investigate the cause.

According to Northwestel officials, intermittent phone, data, wireless, and internet outages are being experienced in the Yukon, Northern British Columbia, and the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories.

Officials also say that the rest of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut could experience service interruptions.

Yellowknife RCMP constable Eleanore Sturko said that anyone in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories who is trying to reach RCMP officers and is unable to because of the outage should continue trying to call, but added that all RCMP officers are standing by at the detachments, inviting citizens who need RCMP assistance to come in person if they are able to.

Northwestel officials say the cause of the outage has not yet been determined, but that they are investigating and attempting to get their network back online as soon as possible.
